If someone told me ten years ago that I’d be putting butter in my morning coffee, I’d think they were crazy. It’s been ingrained in our brains to think that butter = death. I’m being dramatic, of course, but most of us believe that eating butter and other fats will clog our arteries and ultimately lead to a heart attack.
New science is painting a different picture. As it turns out, fat is a powerful energy source and vital to our body’s functioning.
What does all of this have to do with collagen?
I learned about Bulletproof coffee – the coffee with butter – from Dave Asprey. And Mr. Asprey is the same man behind Bulletproof Collagen Protein. Asprey calls himself a biohacker, and he’s completely transformed his health following the high-fat, low-carb way.
That’s why I trusted that his brand’s collagen protein would be the real deal. And I wasn’t disappointed.
And if you know anything about the paleo or keto way of life, you know that fat, protein and collagen are important parts of a healthy diet.
What is Bulletproof?
Bulletproof offers supplements, foods and technologies that help people overcome the biological obstacles keeping them from having the energy and motivation they desire.
The company says their mission is to “help people perform better, think faster, and live better using a proven blend of ancient knowledge and brand new technologies.”
Bulletproof is the same company behind the Brain Octane supplement that keto and paleo dieters swear by.
Brain Octane oil, for those of you who don’t know, converts into ketones faster than coconut and other MCT oils with lauric acid. It also produces more ketones than coconut oil, which helps the body switch over to using fat as fuel.
Why Do You Need a Collagen Supplement?
Let’s take a minute to talk about collagen and gelatin.
Bone broth is all the rage in the alternative health and fitness world. It’s to the point where I can grab a cup of bone broth at my local café.
What’s the big deal about bone broth? It contains gelatin.
Collagen, when cooked, transforms into gelatin.
Collagen is the most important protein in the body. It forms our connective tissues, bones, skin, hair – just about every part of our body needs collagen.
Lack of collagen can cause a wide range of issues, from aging skin to brittle hair and even osteoporosis.
Collagen is found in bones and tough bits of meat that contain lots of connective tissue. These are the parts our ancestors ate, or turned into a stew. We throw them away.
Gelatin is often called the “missing piece” in the modern diet. Our ancestors would have consumed a lot of gelatin, but we consume almost none if we follow the standard American diet.
What can collagen do for your body?
- Help improve skin elasticity and slow the signs of aging.
- Help normalize the gut and prevent/eliminate leaky gut.
- Help improve joint and bone health.
You can make your own bone broth to get the collagen (or gelatin) boost you want.
But let’s face it – making bone broth is time consuming. If you do it right, it can take 48 hours to make broth. Yes, two days.
The Bulletproof Collagen Protein supplement gives you a convenient way to get the collagen boost you need without having to sit down to a plate of raw tendons. Or having to spend two days making broth.
What’s in Bulletproof Collagen Protein?
Bulletproof’s Collagen Protein has just a few ingredients:
Hydrolyzed Collagen Powder
Hydrolyzed collagen is processed to make it easier for human absorption.
The collagen in this supplement is enzymatically processed several times, which leaves its peptides intact. That makes this supplement highly bioavailable for easy absorption.
Raw Cacao Powder and Cocoa Powder
The raw cacao powder gives a chocolate flavor without the added sugar and junk you find in milk chocolate.
Plus, cacao has its own health benefits. It’s loaded with:
- Phenylethylamine (PEA)
Cacao has also been shown to:
- Make you happy (who doesn’t like chocolate?)
- Boost your libido
- Keep mood swings at bay
- Keep you looking and feeling young
- Protect the heart thanks to its flavonoids, which are anti-inflammatory and antioxidative
- Provide a natural energy boost
- Give you glowing skin
Bulletproof’s supplement also contains a small amount of cocoa powder to offset the slightly bitter taste of raw cacao. The cocoa powder is organic, too, so there’s no need to worry about pesticides.
Bulletproof XCT Oil
XCT oil is a blend of: tapioca dextrin, caprylic and capric acid triglycerides from highly refined palm or coconut oil.
Bulletproof also sells its XCT oil as a separate supplement, so you’re really getting more bang for your buck with this collagen supplement. XCT oil is a unique energy source that’s found in coconut oil. It’s rapidly absorbed by the body, and easily transforms into ketones to give your body long-lasting fuel.
Coconut Creamer Powder
The coconut cream powder gives the collagen a creamy texture, and is made with just a few simple ingredients:
- Coconut oil
- Non-fat dry coconut milk
- Non-GMO maltodextrin
- Tri-calcium phosphate
- Gum acacia
- Less than 2% sunflower lecithin
Erythritol and Refined Stevia Leaf Extract
Erythritol and refined stevia leaf extract both act as natural sweeteners that have zero calories.
Two scoops of Collagen Protein will give you 23g of protein. It contains mostly Type I collagen, but also has some Type III.
Where is the Collagen Sourced?
Collagen supplements are sourced from animals, usually chicken, cow (bovine) or fish.
Bulletproof’s collagen comes from grass-fed, pasture-raised, hormone-free cows.
Bulletproof Collagelatin vs Collagen Protein
Bulletproof offers two types of collagen products:
- Collagen Protein
Both are really similar in nature, but there’s one major difference:
- Collagelatin gels when it’s cooled (think Jello)
Collagelatin contains both hydrolyzed collagen and grass-fed gelatin. This is a great supplement for sauces and desserts. It’s a natural thickener, so it’s great for cooking.
Personally, I prefer the Collagen Protein powder. It dissolves in hot or cold liquids, and it tastes great. The chocolate flavor gives my shakes an extra kick.
I’ve tried a lot of collagen supplements, and I think Bulletproof’s is the best tasting collagen powder out there.
The Best Way to Eat Collagen Protein: Bulletproof Coffee
If you’re not a fan of coffee, Bulletproof Collagen Protein is the way to go. It tastes great, it dissolves easily in liquids, and it’s easy for the body to absorb.
But if you can’t start your day without a cup of coffee, then I highly recommend you try my favorite option: Bulletproof coffee with collagen protein.
One serving contains Bulletproof’s cold brew coffee, 2 teaspoons of grass-fed butter, 2 teaspoons of Brain Octane Oil and a 15g serving of collagen protein.
The Bulletproof coffee with collagen protein is my personal favorite choice because:
- I already drink coffee in the morning
- I don’t have to mix anything
I just grab a bottle (or carton) of my cold brew coffee and head to work. If you’ve tried to make Bulletproof coffee on your own and just can’t seem to get it right, this is a great alternative. There’s absolutely no guesswork involved.
The options don’t stop there. You can also get Bulletproof collagen in convenient bar and bite sized snack forms. There are great on the go or after a workout.
If you’re serious about adding more collagen to your diet, Bulletproof’s Collagen Protein may be the right solution for you.
This highly bioavailable source of collagen is easily mixed into your favorite drink or food. Aside from the chocolate flavor, you’ll never even know it’s in your food – but you’ll get all of the skin, joint and health benefits that collagen offers.
